Wed In Bliss

Getting married is always a special occasion, but when you tie the knot at The Library it becomes Super Special.

Samui has a special place in the hearts of thousands of couples from all around the world. It’s where they made their public declaration of love by getting married on the island’s sandy shores. Many travel great distances to be here, as do their friends and families. And event planning is now a serious part of any notable hotel’s repertoire.

Such is the demand for beach weddings on the island that virtually all of the top-class resorts have dedicated wedding planners and events personnel. And to stand out from the crowd takes more than just an idyllic location and a warm welcome. Creativity, innovation and real attention to every detail are what sets the best above the rest. And it’s not just the ceremony that’s important; that part is relatively short albeit highly significant, it’s what happens before and long after that counts just as much.

Take a walk along Chaweng Beach and you’ll notice that it’s lined with resorts of all shapes, sizes and standards. And, to a degree, there’s a hotel-complex look about many of them, except one in particular – The Library. Elegant, minimalist and conceptually designed, their 13 suites and 13 studios sit amongst manicured lawns and old-growth trees. A stunning red pool and spacious terrace are all that separate you from the beach. And their acclaimed restaurant, The Page, overlooks the sea, the pool, the garden and a real, well-stocked library.

It’s quickly become the destination of choice for those seeking a wedding celebration that allows the traditional to mix with the modern. And General Manager, Khun Jirapa Akkaraj, and her dedicated team are well versed in organizing and hosting a string of high-society events. “We’ve held fashion shows, culinary extravaganzas and wonderful wedding ceremonies and receptions. Whether it’s just a couple on their own seeking a quiet, romantic ceremony or a banqueting feast for a hundred, we approach them in the same way. Quite simply, at the Library anything is possible.”

They have three distinct wedding packages which are starting points that cover the essential elements of a fantastic beach wedding. Their first is the ‘You Know I Do’ Western wedding package which includes floral decorations and beach set-up; a celebrant or minister to conduct the ceremony; hair dressing and make-up for the bride; a bouquet for the bride and buttonhole for the groom; a ‘Honeymoon’ set-up in your room with a bottle of wine; a bottle of sparkling wine and a wedding cake for after the ceremony; a wedding certificate; a complimentary massage to relax you before the ceremony; a private candle-lit dinner for two that you can have at any time; and several surprise gifts and innovative touches around the ceremonial area.

Secondly, they have ‘The Island’ package which has a more traditional Thai approach, although it’s still by the beach. Many of the elements of the first package are included but the blessings are done by Buddhist monks rather than a celebrant or minister and the ceremony, which is conducted in Thai, is very different from what you would be used to at home. Your personal wedding planner at The Library will explain what happens and walk you through it a day or two beforehand. And it isn’t necessary to be a Buddhist to have this type of ceremony. You can also include both Thai and Western parts to any ceremony, should you wish.

Their third package is ‘The Ocean’, and it’s rather special. Just imagine saying, “I do,” on a private yacht in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand. The yacht is decorated with flowers and the ceremony takes place on the boat as the sun is setting. Again, all the additional elements mentioned above are included with a celebrant or minister officiating. Even if you are on dry land you can make a spectacular entrance by arriving on the beach by jet-ski or perhaps more serenely atop an elephant. Either would surprise and delight your guests and it’s not something you’re likely to be able to do at home. Alternatively, the bride can walk down a red carpet that stretches through the garden, past the red swimming pool, around the terrace and onto the beach. It’s a very dignified and enchanting way for any beautiful bride to be escorted down the aisle.

Your wedding planner can also organize a host of additional services, such as professional photographers and videographers, spa and beauty treatments, DJ’s and bands, classical Thai dance and cabaret shows, fireworks and special themes for the wedding or reception. And, of course, there’s post-ceremony canapés and champagne and just about any kind of cuisine you’d like in the evening.

Dining at The Page is always an experience. Whether it’s their legendary breakfasts on the beach, their stunning afternoon ‘High Tea by the Sea’, the incredible tapas or their carefully crafted dinner menu, they’ve all become culinary highlights on the island. And just as much care and precision goes into designing every wedding banquet. You can have a barbecue on the beach with live cooking stations that are heaped with jumbo prawns, snapper, seabass, squid, shellfish, Australian steaks and mouthwatering skewers of chicken, pork and beef. Their Thai fusion cuisine menu marries south-east Asian flavours and Mediterranean specialities. You can opt for three- to ten-course feasts that you can help design – with the help of the chef – and they can provide lavish Thai and international buffets.

The Library is a small boutique hotel and you could take over the whole place for a few days depending on the number of guests you have. They also often have special promotions on accommodation and for group bookings.

Khun Jirapa and her team treat every wedding celebration as a new, one-off event that’s designed specifically for you. And if you’re traveling half-way around the world for a truly memorable occasion, you really should leave the planning and organising to specialists. And the staff at The Library are definitely that.
