14Love is in the air, but so is something else this Valentine’s Day. And it’s the delicious aromas emanating from a thousand restaurants around the island. Many will have special menus prepared for a perfect night of gourmet food and romantic overtones. But there’re far too many to mention here so I’ve picked out a few from around Samui that have excellent reputations and incredible chefs at the helm. Booking as early as possible is definitely recommended.

In Maenam, Chef Suraporn Munyuen leads the brigade at L’escale Restaurant at the Mercure Samui Buri Beach Resort & Spa. He’s one of the island’s most respected Thai chefs and he’s worked at some of Samui’s best known resorts and restaurants and has also spent time in Europe. He was also invited to spent time at a 5-star hotel in Istanbul promoting Thai cuisine.

L’escale has an air-conditioned section and an outdoor terrace overlooking the beach. Their Valentine’s menu is 1,890 baht net per couple including a bottle of sparkling wine. You can make a reservation on 0 7744 7275.

If you’re down in Chaweng then check out Red Snapper Bar & Grill. Sébastien Meunier is the Chef de Cuisine and he began his culinary career in Michelin starred restaurants in his native France. Travels through Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand inspired him to fuse Southeast Asian flavours with Mediterranean classics that have led to Red Snapper being consistently hailed as one of the island’s best fine-dining restaurants. For Valentine’s Day he’s created a chocolate-inspired ‘degustation’ menu priced at 2,777 baht per couple (subject to 7% government tax). Over in Bangrak, just ten minutes or so from Chaweng, you’ll find Prana Resorts & Spa. It sits right on the beach overlooking the bay with the golden Big Buddha statue in the background. Head Chef, Jonny Goodall, is from the UK and has made the exclusively vegetarian Amala Restaurant one of the most talked about dining destinations on Samui. World-experienced Jonny has put the restaurant firmly on the fine-dining map and that’s no easy task on an island famed for its seafood and international cuisine. His style ranges from Modern British to Classical European, Middle-Eastern, South-American and Asian.
