A Majestic Feast

Sareeraya's Chef's Table is royally blissful.

20-21-(1)The way to a foodie’s or tourist's heart is through a good menu. And at Sareeraya's restaurant, Chef's Table, they are well aware of this. Their menu is certainly one of the most distinctive on the island, with a rare selection of ingredients. What you read is what you get - a piquant treat.

Built in 2008, with 49 spacious contemporary rooms with large bathrooms, Jacuzzis and indoor and outdoor rain showers, Sareeraya is voguish in its appearance. Located at the quieter northern end of Chaweng, but just ten minutes’ walking distance from the main shopping area, the hotel has the privilege of calmness, with the absence of motorised water sports on the beach-side and loud music from clubs on the road-side. All rooms have an excellent view of the infinity pool going into the ocean. With all this, it's hardly surprising they are ranked highly on TripAdvisor.

Sareeraya is the name of a sea princess from Thai mythology, who keeps the ocean calm and peaceful so that the people of the island can go fishing and make a living. She is known to bring good luck. The hotel is befitting of this beautiful name and there's something ethereal about this space.

If you visit 'Her Bar', you may want to try the Pearl of Sareeraya (gin, apricot brandy and lychee juice) or another visitor's favourite - White Monkey (Bailey's Irish cream, banana liqueur, banana and cream). For Malibu lovers, they recommend the Sunset (light rum, Malibu, Cointreau, orange juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice and blue grenadine). Trust me; this cocktail is a mind-blowing match with the actual sunset. A picture perfect drink is the Sexy Sexy,20-21-(2) popular with the ladies, and mixed with gin, vodka, a little bit of tequila, Blue Curacao, lemon juice and lychee. There are happy hours from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm every day. And there's good news for parents and non-drinkers - the discount is not just on the alcoholic beverages, but the non-alcoholic ones too. So if the kids want smoothies, shakes or juices, these are also buy one and get one free.

Chef's Table hosts a seafood barbecue by the beach twice weekly. On Mondays, you can experience the Thai buffet spread that includes a large selection of Thai appetizers, main courses, salads and desserts. They go Asian on Thursdays - the team prepares a delicious buffet spread of popular Thai, Asian and Western dishes including sushi, and sashimi. Barbecue delights with Australian beef, steaks, seafood, salads, desserts and many other delicacies are available on both these days.

Along with the buffet dinner, there's live music performance from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. And on request, Chef's Table offers a special Kantoke Thai set menu.

If you're visiting the restaurant any other day, here are a few recommendations from the comprehensive menu.

From the starters section, the chef recommends smoked salmon prepared with apple, wasabi sherbet, crispy wontons, lemon jelly, pickled onions, fried capers and horseradish mayonnaise.

The ‘Sunburst Thai Pomelo Salad’ with shredded chicken and coconut is the chef's pick from the salad counter. For vegetarians, ‘Mozzarella Salad’, presented with mozzarella cheese, cherry, sun-dried and queen tomatoes, tomato sorbet, rocket and walnuts with white balsamic dressing, makes a delightful order.

For your main course, if you're a noodle fan, ‘Ratna’,20-21-(4) fried rice noodles with pork or chicken with Thai broccoli in soy sauce and gravy is something you must try.

But one of their best dishes is the ‘Spaghetti Carbonnara’ - bacon and egg with parmesan shavings. Another delight is the ‘Mushroom Risotto’ – a selection of mushrooms with crispy shallots, parmesan and truffle oil. All pasta dishes are served with mixed salad.

And for those who visit for a quick bite, the ‘Sareeraya Burger’ served with salad garnish and shoestring fries is something to look out for. You get to choose between a hamburger, cheese burger or chicken burger. Also, you choose your extras: egg, cheese, bacon or pineapple.

What are we missing here? The desserts, of course. Go for the peanut butter parfait. It's a mixture of toffee pudding, amaretto cream, almond oil and ginger snap crisps.

Chocolate lovers should save space for the 'Textures of Chocolate' dessert (chocolate mousse log, chocolate ice cream, white chocolate powder, chocolate jelly, mocha chocolate beans and chocolate tuile). This is utterly sinful.

Gluten- free dishes are also available for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Sareeraya has a special option for romantic dinners. As the candlelight flame sways to the sound of the waves, you are escorted to your private tent on the beach. You will be welcomed with flower garlands, a glass of Kir Royal and treated to an exquisite five-course menu. This is very popular with honeymooners.

You may wish to complement your meal with a bottle of Two Oceans (Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot), an easy-drinking wine with intense berry flavours and soft, elegant tannins. This is available at just 990 Baht ++ per bottle during the month of October.

To complete this first-class majestic retreat, go pamper yourself with a hot stone massage at Raya, their private spa.
