A Special Time

Not only is November a great month to visit Samui for all the normal reasons, it’s also Loy Kratong!


01Well, here we are on Samui in November. And although it’s generally the wettest time of the year, being right in the middle of the rainy season, the plus side is that it’s less busy – meaning that there’s all the more for you and me! It’s also the month that the famous Loy Kratong festival is held, this year being on the 21st.

And this month our feature writers are out and about dodging in and out of the rain collecting all the information for November’s Samui Wining & Dining. Rob De Wet starts off with a visit to Sareeraya Villas & Suites in Chaweng where he joins in the Thai cooking class at their renowned Chef’s Table restaurant and comes away an expert in preparing the local cuisine. Next, he goes along to Nora Chaweng Hotel where he meets up with November’s ‘Chef of The Month’, Khun Noppadol Sae-phu, and finds out all about the man behind the ‘whites’.

Whilst Rob’s still in Chaweng, he attends Kandaburi Resort & Spa’s ‘Italian Fever Night’, where he over-indulges in the sumptuous spread laid out before him whilst watching an entertaining Polynesian dance show.

The following day, Rob has expert advice in how to make a perfect cup of coffee from Khun Tawachai Moonyong at the newly-opened The Coffee Club, on Chaweng Beach Road, and finds out that there’s a lot more to it than ripping open a sachet of 3-in-1 and adding water!

Meeting interesting people is one of the perks of a feature writer’s life and Rob always enjoys getting the low-down on the wine industry from Matthias Gerbert at Black Forest Distribution Co., Ltd. Rob finds out that Matthias’ outlook for wine on Samui is pretty bleak at the moment due to the world’s current economic woes. And so they drown their sorrows in a nice bottle of Zinfandel or two whilst discussing the issue!

Someone who’s business is absolutely booming is Erik Larsen, the General Manager of Rocky’s Boutique Resort, in Lamai. And Rob spends a day with him discovering all about the fabulous amenities Rocky’s provides especially for MICE. No, not those little furry things but the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions market that’s such an important part of many high-end resorts around the world.

And Rob’s next trip out this month is to Melati Beach Resort & Spa where he meets up with The Melati Duo, in the form of Roland Manalo and Salvation Delgardo, and not only does Rob get to spend an evening being entertained by their rich sounds, he also manages to squeeze in a slap-up meal at the resort’s View Pha Ngan restaurant at the same time.

His final trip in November takes him to the ever-popular Poppies Resort to speak with General Manager, John Ens, about the remarkable loyalty their staff have for the place. Many of whom have been working there since day one, back in 1994.

And our other full-time feature writer, Johnny Paterson, is also trying to stay dry this month as he travels from one assignment to another. He, too, visits Sareeraya Villas & Suites where he interviews their Executive Chef, Hans Engerer, about the extraordinary success their Chef’s Table restaurant has enjoyed since opening just one year ago (I wonder if he spots Rob in the kitchen at the cooking class whilst he’s there?).

Next, Johnny’s over to Karma Samui resort, on the road leading from Chaweng to Choeng Mon, to receive a few recipes from Food and Beverage Manager, Jeff Egberts, that we’re sharing with you. And his last fact-finding visit takes him to local restaurant, Maenam Cheer, where he has a massive lunch with our staff photographer, Khun Krit, at a price so low you won’t believe.

Rounding off the show, as he does every month, is our very own Wine Guru, Peter James. And his November article is a fascinating exposé of the commonly held wine myths which are forever circulating.

And that’s it. Oh, except to wish you a very happy stay on Samui whilst keeping out of the rain and wining and dining to your heart’s content in our wonderful restaurants.
