Beachside Dining

Baitong Restaurant at Banana Fan Sea Resort offers great food and a seaside location to boot.

8Everybody wants to eat on the beach while they’re on holiday here. There's something so very romantic about beachside dining, from the fresh sea air to the sound of waves lapping on the sand. And then there's the fact that you can simply saunter on down to the beach after your meal and walk off your food with the sand under your toes.

But just having a beachside location doesn’t necessarily assure a perfect ambience, because for that you need a whole other set of factors that will maximize the vibe and surroundings. And these are not natural dynamics, they are the things that the architects, interior decorators and hotel managers have to create and maintain.

Candles on tables, low lighting, a light breeze aided by gentle fans, a guitarist playing love songs – these are all elements that do just that, and they are all present at the successful Baitong Restaurant at Banana Fan Sea Resort, located towards the southern end of Chaweng Beach.

Sauntering into this beachside eatery during the evening you’re immediately hit with a vibe that oozes ‘relaxed holiday’. There are a few different places to sit too, right down on the sand are some tables set up with billowing white tablecloths. Above them, on a raised platform that leads to the resort, is another set of tables, some open air and others under a shelter, and then there are some more still set up by the pool. This variety of seating options means you can tailor the experience to what you’re looking for on that particular evening.

The resident guitarist and singer knows just what the clientèle at a resort on a paradise island are after too. And he doesn’t only reel off his old faithful nightly staples, he also goes around the restaurant and asks each table for a personal request – some people choose holiday classics and others romantic solos. Perched on a raised area in the covered section of the restaurant, he looks down over the diners as he performs their selections.

Traditional Thai dishes feature heavily on the menu alongside Western ones, as is to be expected from any good resort’s signature restaurant. And an international wine list complements the equally wide reaching food menu. Popular also are the themed dinner evenings and buffet nights. Thursday is Thai night, with Thai classical dancers from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and on Monday there’s a Meat and Seafood BBQ from 6:00 pm till 10:00 pm.

A great starter for those who love zingy Thai dishes that jump start your palate is the Minced Pork Salad, comprised of pork and Thai basil in a tangy dressing, served with a side salad made from fresh cucumber, lettuce and green beans. The Pomelo Salad is another dish that wakes up the senses. Served in a large glass bowl in the shape of a shell, it includes pomelo pieces, ground and toasted nuts, coconut shavings and a tart sauce. It’s a dish that’s light but also has great depth of flavour and crunch.

Curries at Baitong are no mean feat – they really pack in the flavour. The Duck Curry is served in a thick red sauce with pineapple chunks, grapes, tomatoes and Thai basil and has a real kick to it. The curry sauce is so rich and moreish that the duck, fruit and vegetables almost become the accompaniment. Chicken with Cashew Nuts is always a popular order amongst tourists, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint. Tender chunks of chicken are fried in a full-bodied but sweet sauce alongside onions, cashews, dried chilli and quartered mushrooms.

Another thing that draws people to Baitong are its ample and generous happy hours. And if that sentence was a little bit confusing I’ll clarify – there are a number of happy hours and you get a great deal on drinks during each of them! Every day there is not one, not two, but three happy hours, where cocktails and much more are served for a great, discounted price.

Between the unbeatable ambience, fantastic food and reasonably priced drinks you really can’t go wrong dining at Baitong.
