For Fork’s Sake

4K restaurant at X2 Samui serves tapas and wine that’s more than just fine.

7Tapas and wine. That’s what the team at 4K (pronounced 'fork') restaurant, located in X2 (pronounced 'cross to') Samui, want to be known for on the island. So they’ve gone all out to ensure that they’ve not only got the best of those two elements, but also the perfect ambience within which to enjoy them. But let’s start with the food.

The tapas menu kicks off with sesame-seared tuna served with wasabi, chili mayo and ginger pickle, and moves onto classics like prosciutto de Parma with melon, and marinated olives with dill pickle and cocktail onions. And the wine has been perfectly selected to suit all tastes. The list spans a broad range of countries’ wines, including Italian Cantine Atesine pinot grigio, Australian Daekin Estate pinot noir and French De Chansac rosé.

A good cheese selection can be a clincher for some people. One common downfall of a cheese platter is getting a few types you love and the rest being varieties you’ll inevitably end up leaving. That’s why at 4K you choose every cheese yourself. You’re given a simple menu and a pen and you tick the cheeses you want, be that Italian bocconcini, Swiss gruyere or gouda from Holland. And the same applies for the cold cuts. Tapas is served from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

International, Thai and fusion fare is dotted throughout the main dinner menu, so diners really can choose what they like. There’s also a pizza menu that, along with classic flavours, includes some interesting fusion twists, like pad thai pizza, which incorporates the ingredients of a pad thai on top of a pizza base.

Lunchtime is also a great time of day to pop into X2. The restaurant has daily lunch specials that the creative cooking team pride themselves on – look for these on the blackboard located at the entrance to the restaurant. Along with these, there’s the Western lunch menu, with items like burgers and pizzas, as well as Thai food.

Drinks have not been neglected at 4K either. There are some really interesting cocktails – some not for the faint-hearted. For a real local experience, the tom yum cocktail mixes up lemongrass and chili with alcohol. Monkey mood is another interesting one, but this one’s perfect as a dessert drink – it’s made from vodka, triple sec, Baileys, crème de menthe and milk. And there are detox drinks and fruit shakes too. The menu is full of interesting twists, like the Siam coffee, a take on Irish coffee that uses Mekhong whisky in the place of Irish whisky. Get there for happy hour, which lasts from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm, and drinks are two-for-one.

The décor at 4K fits in nicely with the rest of the X2 aesthetic – contemporary styling that’s designed to make you feel at home. With couches, comfy grey cushions and low wooden tables, the restaurant feels very much like a lounge. And they play with levels too in order to create more intimate zones. Each section of the dining room is placed on a raised platform so you feel a sense of privacy even within the main restaurant space – not to mention allowing you a better view of the sea.

Basically, the idea behind the design was to create an atmosphere that feels homey, but stylish at the same time. So, as was mentioned, it looks like a living room – albeit one in a very upmarket house! That way guests can really relax and concentrate on enjoying the food, drink and beautiful scenery – 4K is right on the beach, after all.

One major benefit of the ‘no dining table’ concept is that everyone in the restaurant gets a comfy spot – rather than a few people having to fight for the ‘good’ table. Also, this relaxed layout means it doesn’t feel as though the management are trying to stuff as many people in the restaurant as possible. That’s the kind of contemporary luxury they try to incorporate everywhere in the hotel. Because X2 attracts a cosmopolitan group of creative and stylish guests that enjoy living life to the full, but also crave that first-class, private holiday feeling.

Future plans for 4K include a romantic dinner set-up on the beach. Private tables will be put out onto the sand upon request and special seafood set dinners brought out to them. And because the section of beach that X2 is on has a really gentle slope, the tables can be placed impressively far out, creating a truly romantic and very private experience. Guests can sit out under the stars on a candlelit table surrounded only by flowers and billowing white fabrics hanging from a four-poster frame.

Part of the Lifestyle Hotels group, X2 was winner of this year’s TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award. Located in a quiet part of the island near Hua Thanon on the south coast, the beach is shared only with a few high-end residential villa projects, making it feel very secluded. The resort itself fills a five-acre space and comprises 27 villas, most with their own private swimming pool and garden. As you can see, this hotel oozes luxury in all areas.
