STYLISH SAMUI

High above Chaweng, sits Q Bar – the late night venue that pulls out all the stops.

12-13 Glitter, glitz and glam. Three words you may not associate with Samui. And to be fair, there are a few reasons for that: People drink cocktails out of buckets, hardly ever wear shoes and ride around shirtless on motorbikes. But that’s why people come here. To relax and unwind. Men to say farewell – if only for a while – to their ties and collared shirts, while women ditch their gruelling hair and makeup routines to hit the beach fresh-faced. After all, who needs makeup when you’ve got a tan?

And it’s undeniable that we all love chilled out drinking and dining on the beach. But once in a while it’s nice to get a taste of city life again. To wash the salt out of your windswept hair, dig out those glad rags and indulge in some stylish surrounds. And that’s where the lesser-known side of Samui’s nightlife comes in – the chic side.

Up in the hillside, above Chaweng Lake View, there floats a giant, neon sign brandishing a curious, glowing ‘Q’. And that’s where you’ll find the island’s famous Q Bar. There you get to experience high-end nightlife that’s quite literally lifted up out of the chaos of Chaweng, and yet just a short drive away.

exquisite cocktails and chilled champagne.

Whilst it’s always been a sexy bar – even dubbed, “The sexiest place in Thailand” – Q Bar has now been elevated to super-hot standards under the new management of a rather attractive Frenchman. Yuthis Chetty is the new General Manager of Q Bar, and he’s taking no prisoners in his quest to make it the island’s premier, sophisticated party spot.

He came to Samui with big plans to spruce up the already-successful Q Bar, and has just finished a total revamp of the interior. It’s now the ultimate venue to enjoy tapas, cocktails and fine wine. His aim is to echo the classy and cool vibe of bars in the South of France, Ibiza and Paris, where he has previously worked.

Slick table settings are complemented by designer chairs, complete with life-size celebrity faces printed on the fabric – there’s Barack Obama, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Che Guevara. To one side there are stylish white couches around low tables, adorned with ornate shisha pipes. Lighting the bar are coloured bulbs that supply a subtle and ever-changing glow throughout the venue.

And then there’s that view. The balcony of Q Bar spans the entire length of the bar, and looks out not only over Chaweng lake and the whole of Chaweng itself, but also to the sea and the mountains beyond. This panorama is a breathtaking backdrop against which to enjoy some fine wine, exquisite cocktails and chilled champagne.

The new drinks list at Q Bar features all manner of delicious wines and classy cocktails. From an award-winning ‘06 Château Moulin de la Salle Bordeaux, to a fresh and fruity ‘10 Cote de Provence rosé, called Pétale de Rose. And they have plenty of champagnes too – of course – like Moet & Chandon Brut and Cuvee de Dom Pérignon. Or, for those who prefer a medley, the ‘around the world’ cocktail conjures up a luscious mélange of vodka, gin, light rum, whiskey and Crème de Menthe. And the strawberry daiquiri blends together light rum, strawberries, liqueurs, strawberry syrup and sourmix for a real ‘holiday’ feeling.

But it’s not only about drinks at Q Bar – it’s now a restaurant, too. Yuthis has put together a brand new tapas menu, comprised predominantly of Thai food but with some international fare as well. The Thai dishes include finger foods like fried spicy pork, fried chicken wings and fried prawns. And there are healthy options too, such as zingy seafood salad and grilled Thai beef salad. But for those who are just craving some Western food, there are pizzas and potato wedges on offer as well. If, however, you really can’t make your mind up on one dish, then the Q Special is perfect – it’s a three-tiered, mixed Thai platter to share.

Nights at Q Bar kick off at 5:00 pm, when you can chill out on the balcony with a couple of cocktails and some fine finger food while admiring that fantastic sunset view over Chaweng – the perfect way to finish off another day in paradise. And as the evening draws in then warm up act, DJ Nubin, will hit the decks with some chill out, electro, jazz and lounge tracks, accompanied by live guitarist Mister Art. Then as it gets later, watch the vibe pick up and the party really begin, with pumping music that goes on until the wee hours of the morning.chill out, electro, jazz and lounge tracks, accompanied by live guitarist Mister Art.        But that’s not all that Q Bar has to offer. Underneath the terrace bar is a nightclub space that opens exclusively on Saturday nights and special occasions. There you’ll be privy to a truly sexy crowd dancing to the tune of international guest DJs and performers.

Q Bar manages to nail that exclusive vibe while still being – and feeling – accessible to everyone. There are no pesky bouncers or selective door staff. And it doesn’t feel pretentious at all. Instead, it’s stylish but comfortable at the same time – the perfect combination. And at Q Bar you can get all the glitz and glam of a VIP nightclub in Paris or New York, but here on sunny Samui. Not bad, eh?
