Beach Bars

Because drinking with sand under your feet never gets old.

24-25Samui is never short of a beach bar. Walk anywhere on Chaweng Beach and you’ll be no further than a coconut tree or two from the promise of a cold beer and a warm reception. But not all bars are created the same. Some have that extra touch to elevate a beachside tipple to the next level. What we’re talking about is those venues that nail a perfect balance of classy ambience and a relaxed island vibe.

One brand new addition to Samui’s list of such watering holes is Beach Bar at Bandara Resort and Spa. Located on a quiet stretch of beach near Fisherman’s Village, it has everything you need to enjoy rainbow coloured cocktails in paradise. And that includes two happy hours with not only drinks on special but snacks too. These happy hours last from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm to 11:00 pm. You can get ‘buy two get one free’ on local beer and ‘buy one get one free’ on selected cocktails and local spirits. Bandara Resort and Spa is also renowned for great Thai and international cuisine which you can enjoy while overlooking the Gulf of Thailand.

Just down the road from Bandara Resort and Spa, at the north end of Fisherman’s Village, is Hansar Samui. This acclaimed luxury hotel is home to a drinking spot that sits neatly between the hotel’s infinity swimming pool and the sea. Here they also serve homemade ice cream to cool you off on those blistering hot days. It’s particularly known for its cocktails that incorporate the freshest of ingredients.

Sareeraya Villas & Suites has a beach bar called Her Bar, which even has a swim up section. But as if that wasn’t enough of a reason to pop down, there’s also a margarita hour where margaritas are 2 for 1 from 10:00 pm to midnight. Another great thing about Sareeraya is its location – just far enough away from Chaweng to be secluded and close enough to be within walking distance.

Now this next one stretches the definition of beach bar just a little bit, but it’s too cool not to put in. The poolside bar at Rocky’s Resort is nestled into the rocky seaside landscape of Lamai – and there’s a touch of beach there too. The bar itself is a fantastically themed tikki hut where you can enjoy your drink while watching waves crash up against the rocks. The quirky touches of this bar make it worth the trip down to Lamai.

The very snazzy W Retreat’s beach bar, SIP, is located on a peninsula, which creates a very wide beach. SIP has got quality cocktails, a gigantic beach and a wicked-cool atmosphere befitting the global jetsetters that frequent it. And while the bar itself is pretty swanky looking, what really catches the eye are the giant flotation devices – that look like human sized hamster wheels – bobbing across the sea. They’re just as popular with adults as they are with children.

The internationally acclaimed hang out spot, Beach Republic, is less of a beach bar and more of a beach club. An Ocean Club, to be precise. It’s a stylish poolside venue where people can spend the day on huge day beds and cabanas while drinking cocktails and bubbly. With guest DJs and live performers, the vibe here really echoes that of an Ibiza hangout. To gain access for the day you can either pay 500 Baht or simply spend that on food and drink.

Nikki Beach is another upmarket, party beach bar that has DJs play throughout the day. Located on the opposite side of the island from Chaweng at Lipa Noi, this venue has the unique advantage of being in a prime sunset position. Nikki Beach is a fairly upmarket venue but your bill shouldn’t break the bank unless you start ordering champagne by the bucket load – which, to be fair, a lot of people do at Nikki Beach. The promoters describe the vibe well. “From jet setters partying for the weekend to the local sexy sunbather, Nikki beach Koh Samui is the ultimate beach club and the sexiest place on earth.”

So you see there are a lot of awesome beach bar options for you here on Samui. This article doesn’t even scratch the surface. But what better way to find them than embarking on a beach bar crawl and stumbling across them yourself – metaphorically of course.
