Dining Under The Stars

Prasuthon Restaurant is the ideal place for a romantic evening for two.

17Being on holiday is great. No work place issues to deal with, no mobile phone ringing constantly and, if you're smart, no e-mails to respond to or be concerned about. It's a time to relax, recharge the batteries and spend time with those you love. You can also take long walks on the beach, sit around the pool and indulge yourself a little. And again, if you're smart, even surprise your partner with a romantic dinner for two under the stars.

Samui is blessed with hundreds of beachside restaurants. And deciding which ones to try can be difficult. Finding the perfect setting for a private dinner for two can be a challenge. And it isn't something you want to get wrong. So it's best to opt for a restaurant with a great reputation for food and service. And leave the details to the experts.

And that's where Restaurant Manager Artis Hoonjin comes in. Better known to everyone simply as Joe, he runs the Prasuthon Restaurant at the Nora Beach Resort and Spa on the northern end of Chaweng. It sits on a little bay away from the main town beach, and overlooks the uninhabited small island of Koh Pak Som which you can walk out to when the tide is low. Every night of the week, except Wednesday's, Joe and his team set up just two special tables on the beach for their incredible 'Dining Under the Stars' experience. As you can imagine, reservations are necessary.

The resort is built on a spectacular hillside and when you arrive you can get a buggy down to the restaurant. But it's an easy stroll along a winding path and through beautifully landscaped gardens to the beachfront. Make some time to take it all in and you can always get a buggy back up to the lobby at the end of the evening. Their beach bar has happy hours from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm, and it's a wonderful spot to sip some half-priced cocktails as the sun is going down. You'll then be escorted to your private, decorated gazebo and be waited on hand and foot with your own private chef cooking tableside for you.

Executive Chef Kittichai Sroythong oversees every dish that leaves the kitchen and he has a wealth of top-class culinary experience. He was born and raised in Bangkok and, as his father was a chef, he took an interest in cooking from an early age. Developing his craft in some of the capitals best hotels he moved to Samui in 2005 and has been here ever since. "Like everyone who visits Samui I too fell in love with the island as soon as I set foot here. And the culinary standards are just as high on Samui as they are in Bangkok. But the main difference is that our guests are much more relaxed, they're here on vacation and not on a quick business trip. And rather than being stuck in a windowless kitchen in a city hotel all day, my kitchen here is by the beach and therefore so am I, altogether much more pleasurable."

Chef Kittichai has compiled two 'Dining Under the Stars' menus, one focused on Thai cuisine (2,500 baht per person net) and the other on International cuisine (3,000 baht per person net). And the price is inclusive of a complimentary glass of wine per person and there's no tax or service charge added. He's also happy to create a special menu if say one person is vegetarian or doesn't enjoy red meat. Just let them know when you make your booking, preferably at least 24 hours in advance. And do arrive hungry, there's a huge amount of food on offer!

Restaurant Manager Joe can also arrange a specially made cake, for free, if it's a birthday or anniversary, and can even help make the evening go perfectly if you're planning to propose marriage. Each evening they also have live musicians and they can serenade your loved one with a favourite song if you wish. As with everything, simply let Joe know and consider it done.
