14-15

Samui is one of the most desirable islands in the world for couples looking to create the perfect wedding day. And many of the top resorts on the island regularly organise memorable ceremonies and fabulous reception parties afterwards. But there's always one that stands out from the crowd. And on Samui that's Rocky's Boutique Resort near Lamai. They've been the number one resort of choice for discerning couples for many years. And their dream-maker is Rocky's very own dedicated Wedding Planner, Ann Lim.

JP : Hi Ann, tell us what you do.

AL : Well, as the job title suggests, I and the team here at Rocky's plan and prepare everything necessary for couples to have their perfect beach wedding. We have several packages that include a celebrant or pastor to conduct the ceremony, all the floral decorations, bouquets, buttonholes, hair-styling and make-up for the bride, a wedding cake, sparkling wine and canapés for the couple, a wedding certificate and much more. In addition, we can add that special Thai element to traditional Western ceremonies by having the bride escorted to the beach by a Thai Long Drum Parade. And for couples who want to experience a more traditional Thai ceremony, we can have monks from the local temple perform a separate blessing ceremony.

JP : What else do couples ask for?

AL : The packages provide everything necessary to have a fantastic beach wedding. And in certain months of the year we also include two nights deluxe accommodation for the couple. We can also organise spa and beauty treatments and professional wedding photographers and videographers. Couples can also have Thai musicians playing traditional instruments, they can arrive on top of an elephant that's dressed in full wedding regalia and have a Thai dance troupe perform after the ceremony. Quite simply, we tailor the wedding day to the couple's specific wishes.

JP : Does the wedding have to be legal?

AL : No it doesn't. Thai law states that a wedding ceremony is permitted regardless of actual marital status. Some couples choose to perform the 'legal' part of the wedding in their home country and then celebrate the symbolic ceremony here with us. What we can do is provide a replica of the Thai marriage certificate for couples to sign on the wedding day. Or alternatively, we can seamlessly arrange all the legal documentation and I will happily detail everything that the couple has to do to ensure the process is straightforward.

JP : What happens if it rains on the day of the wedding ?

AL : There're two options available in the unlikely event of rain. We have a beautiful, private area in our restaurant overlooking the sea where we can set up the ceremony. And we also have a private air-conditioned banquet room. Both areas can be stunningly decorated if it becomes necessary.

JP : How many guests can Rocky's accommodate for a wedding?

AL : We can comfortably host around 60 for the ceremony and reception afterwards.

JP : What kind of music do you provide when the bride is walking down the aisle?

AL : We usually have a Thai Long Drum Parade while the bride is walking from the room, past the gardens and the swimming pool to the beach. And there is a musician who plays the Khim (a traditional Thai xylophone) while the bride is walking down the aisle. If couples have a special song that they would like to be played then we can set up a sound system on the beach that can connect to an iPod or CD player.

JP : Do you have a wedding rehearsal?

AL : Couples often check-in a few days before the ceremony and I meet with them to go over last minute details. Everything has been planned well in advance and it's more a matter of walking the couple through the schedule for the day. The celebrant or pastor will also meet with the couple to chat through the specifics of the ceremony, which are also sent to them in advance so they can make changes or additions to it.

JP : What happens after the ceremony?

AL :  After champagne, canapés and sunset photographs, our award-winning Executive Chef Azizskandar Awang and his team take over. They can prepare anything from a beach barbecue to a formal ten course fine-dining menu. And Chef Azizskandar works closely with couples to design unique menus for them and their guests. He uses only the very best quality local and imported produce for his signature menus in 'The Dining Room' restaurant. And he designs wedding menus with just as much skill, attention to detail and pride.

JP : And what about entertainment in the evening?

AL : We can book solo guitarists, duos, bands and international DJ's. And we can put on an amazing fireworks show, cabaret and dance shows and feature whichever kind of music suits the couple and their guests.

JP : What's the best month to get married?

AL : May, June and September to November are the best months for those looking for a cost-effective celebration. There're usually good deals on flights and accommodation in these months. January to April and July, August and December are exceptionally busy times and we take bookings 12-18 months in advance for these peak periods.

JP : What do you believe makes Rocky's so special and unique?

AL : First of all, privacy. We have an idyllic, secluded cove for our wedding celebrations, far from the crowds of the busy town beaches. You won't have large, pot-bellied gentlemen in speedos walking past as you exchange vows and rings, it will just be you and your guests. In addition, we have a very experienced events team dedicated to ensuring an incredible wedding day for every couple. Rocky's is a family owned and run resort and we pride ourselves on treating each and every guest as a part of our family. Having a wedding at Rocky's gives couples the freedom to relax and enjoy their time with their loved ones without the stress and hassle of planning for the big day - that's what we do. And it's what we love doing.
