Having fantastic dining opportunities on Samui really adds to the tropical holiday experience.


It’s A PleasureBeing on Samui is all about relaxing. And whether that’s by lazing on the beach all day or getting out and about and leisurely seeing the sights, you’re sure to feel totally rejuvenated during your stay. But we’re always busy…

And Rob De Wet, one of our feature writers, starts of the month with a trip to the enchanting Spirit House Restaurant & Spa Resort, in Chaweng, where he joins their Thai cooking class and comes away a veritable chef. The following day he’s over to Samui’s leading specialised food importers, European Fine Foods, and finds out all about their recent successful trip to the ‘ThaiFEX – World of Food ASIA 2011’, in Bangkok, where they had a huge stand and attracted much attention and secured numerous orders for their excellent produce.


Rob’s next trip takes him on Hansar Samui’s fabulous ‘Sunset Cruise’ when he goes aboard their luxury boat, xxx, and enjoys a marvelous buffet upon the ocean waves. And later that week, he visits the lovely Buco Restaurant & Bar, which is situated on a perfect stretch of beach in Chaweng Noi, where he dines and then comes away with their special recipe for ‘Tiger Prawns with Green Curry Sauce and Young Coconut’.


Any excuse to visit Rocky’s Boutique Resort’s fine dining restaurant, The Dining Room, is a good one and Rob’s reason for sampling their superb cuisine this time is to interview their amazing jazz trio, comprising Josh Evans, Norman King and Annabelle Nicholls. And Rob’s final journey this month is to north-east Samui’s spectacular The Tongsai Bay resort where he meets up with Managing Director, Michael Holehouse, and learns all about the impressive facilities they offer visiting MICE (that’s meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) participants.


One of our other full-time feature writers, Johnny Paterson, also has an interesting time this month out and about around the island. And his first stopping point is the grand Mercure Samui Buri Resort, on Maenam Beach, where he finds out all about their all-inclusive wedding packages (and being a wedding celebrant himself, Johnny’s more than impressed with their set-up).


Johnny’s over to Chaweng the next day to meet with renowned Thai chef, Khun Kanchana, who’s the Executive Chef at The Beach Club at Buri Rasa resort, and learns all about the lady behind the whites. And then he visits Panus Malai, the Food and Beverage Manager at Nora Beach Resort and Spa on the northern end of town and discovers the reasons why Panus loves Samui and intends staying.


As two of Johnny’s main passions in life are eating great food and meeting interesting people (as we can see from his previous trips out this month), he takes great delight in going to the Coffee Club on the busiest part of Chaweng Beach Road and spending a day with Khun Jiraporn, the charming Restaurant Manager, to find out exactly what her job entails. And being there all day means eating Coffee Club cuisine several times too. No wonder Johnny loves his work!


His last journey in September takes him to a local noodles restaurant on the ring-road in Lamai, right on the corner across from the main Lamai temple, where he has a terrific lunch at an unbelievably low cost.


And closing the show, as he does every month, is our resident Wine Guru, Peter James, who also visits The Dining Room at Rocky’s Boutique Resort (it’s a popular place!). His mission is to attend one of their monthly wine dinners, and enjoys every last second of it.


So, as you can see, although our staff aren’t exactly having a holiday like you are, it would certainly seem like they are to a lot of people!
